Crisis Intervention is NOT psychotherapy; rather, it is a specialized acute emergency mental health intervention which requires specialized training. Just as emergency medical responders are trained for pre-hospital care, crisis intervention has a more immediate focus and thus is not a form of therapy or counseling. For this reason, crisis intervention is sometimes called “emotional first aid.” Designed to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum, this course will prepare participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services for both the individual and for groups. Fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) will be outlined, and participants will receive knowledge and time to practice using the various tools such as, group crisis interventions, demobilizations, defusings, and the Critical Incident
Stress Debriefing (CISD). How to assess appropriate follow-up services and referrals, when necessary, will also be discussed.
This course is designed for anyone who responds to Crisis and Disasters. Cynthia works with the existing curriculum to identify how to apply it in the Zoo and Aquarium field for those who respond when there is a crisis or disaster that occurs for people or the animals in your care. This may include Veterinarians, Keepers, Dart team members, Gun teams, or other First Responders, Employee Assistance, and Emergency Service individuals.
This 3-day course combines ALL of the content of ICISF’s Assisting Individuals in Crisis & Group Crisis Intervention courses. GRIN is a 27-hour program. Taught over the course of three days (preferably consecutive days).
This course curriculum must be taught by an International Critical Incident Stress Foundation Instructor (ICISF). Cynthia Krosky is a recognized, approved and certified (ICISF) Instructor in this course.
In compliance with the criteria set forth by the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Department of Emergency Health Services Professional and Continuing Education (PACE), only those certificates which reflect the full contact hours (e.g., full attendance) will be issued an ICISF certificate of attendance.
