Mental health first aid for adults

Course Description

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for adults is an international education program proven to be effective in teaching adults how to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges. This course provides instruction in identifying risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. MHFA is a course that provides participants with tools for identifying risk factors and warning signs of mental health and substance use disorders. The training provides instructions on the strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help if needed. It also instructs participants about recovery and resiliency so that individuals that experience these challenges can learn, get better, and use their strength to stay well. 

Program Length and Learning Objectives:

This course delivers 8.5 hours of content


Participants will be able to:

  • Mental Health First Aid is an 8.5-hours of content.
  • This includes two hours of pre-work must be completed to attend the course.
  • Describe the purpose of MHFA and the role of the Mental Health First Aider. Explain the recovery from a mental health challenge is possible.
  • Describe the principle of safety and privacy for both the MHF Aider and the person receiving first aid.
  • Explain the 5 steps of MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE).
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of mental health challenges by
  • Evaluating the impact of early intervention.
  • Applying appropriate steps for MHFA when a person shows early signs, worsening signs, and/or a crisis situation.
  • Choose appropriate methods for self-care following application of MHFA in a crisis or non-crisis situation.
